Overview of Programmes

PROGRAMME FOR THE NATIONAL DIPLOMA IN TECHNOLOGY

The National Diploma in Technology programme will be governed by the provisions laid down by the Sri Lanka Navy Orders 0609, NAHA.5 Memorandum dated 29TH September 2014 and KDU. Academic and Training components of the National Diploma in Technology Programme will be conducted by the Director of Studies (DOS), Naval Institute of Technology (NIT) with attachments to ships/ establishments of the SLN and other outside professional organizations in accordance with the syllabi accepted by the Senate of the KDU & approved by the Commander of the Navy.



The Aim of these programmes are to award National Diploma in Technology [MRE/ ELE/ ETC/ HR&SC/ AME] from the KDU to artificer sailors who join as artificer apprentices with necessary Professional Knowledge and basic military training to pursue their career as Artificers in the Sri Lanka navy.



The objectives of this National Diploma in Technology are to ensure, The artificer apprentices have a deep understanding of theory, practice, and relevant methodology and recent developments in a particular are of study and be able to apply the concepts and principles in the area of study, analyze information and suggest solution to problems in an employment context of SLN and so be able to communicate successfully, the results of analysis and arguments to specialist and non-specialist persons in SLN.


Titles of the National Diploma in Technology

On successful completion in relevant field of study, artificer apprentices will be conferred one of the following disciplines of National Diploma in Technology as relevant as follows.


01. The National Diploma in Technology (Marine Engineering) – NDT (MRE).
02. The National Diploma in Technology (Electrical Engineering) – NDT (ELE).
03. The National Diploma in Technology (Electronic and Telecommunication Engineering) – NDT (ETR).
04. The National Diploma in Technology (Hull Repair & Ship Construction) – NDT (HR & SC).
05. The National Diploma in Technology (Automobile Engineering) – NDT (AME).


Duration of National Diploma in Technology programme.

Total duration of the National Diploma in Technology programme will be three academic years (six semesters, including 20 weeks equipment familiarization phase and 26 weeks on the job training onboard ships) as indicated below (16 weeks of Foundation module including Basic Military Training will be conducted prior to commencement of the diploma programme).


Academic Year 1– Artificer apprentices Training Course
Semester I- 22 weeks of academic studies at NIT
Semester II - 26 weeks (22 weeks of academic studies at NIT & 04 weeks in-plant training in naval ships)

Academic Year 2 – Artificer apprentices Training Course
Semester III - 22 weeks of academic studies at NIT.
Semester IV - 22 weeks of academic studies at NIT.

Academic Year 3 – Equipment phase and on the job training.
Semester V - 22 weeks of naval equipment familiarization in their relevant field at NIT
Semester VI - 22 weeks of on the job training at naval ships

Syllabus and Course Curriculum.

The Syllabuses for the National Diploma in Technology programme will be issued by the DOS (NIT) and syllabi of the programmes should be approved by the Commander of the Navy and VC of KDU.


Medium of course.

The course will be conducted in English medium.
