Overview of NIT

Sri Lanka Navy being the key force of defence in Sri Lanka is equipped ships & craft, with over 55,000 men in operational, logistical and Technical fields. The primary role of the Sri Lanka Navy, as a specialized arm and first line of the defence services, is to defend the country against any external or internal threat to its territorial integrity. The area under naval surveillance by definition is the entire coast, The territorial waters, the contiguous zone and the exclusive economic zone, over each of which the Navy has specific duties and functions to perform both in times of war and peace.

The Naval Institute of Technology (NIT) is the premier technical training establishment of Sri Lanka Navy, capable of undertaking the training of artificers for Marine Engineering and Electrical Engineering departments up to the level of National Diploma. NIT is a registered vocational training institute of Tertiary and Vocational Education Commission under the registration number of P02/0150 and Sri Lanka Standards Institution has certified all the activities pertaining to training are in accordance with the requirements of ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management System. Presently NIT is accredited to Sir John Kotelawala Defence University (KDU) for awarding National Diploma in Technology programme from year 2012. The NIT conducts training on the following disciplines in Engineering.

We maintain professionalism, confidence, discipline and strength of artificers and commitment to continual improvement of our management system.


Marine Engineering
Electrical Engineering (NDT ELE)
Electronic and Telecommunication Engineering (NDT ETR)
Automobile Engineering (NDT AME)
Hull Repair and Ship Construction (NDT- HR &SC)

This is a full-time +3 year training program completely dedicated to the academic activities. After full-time academic activities at NIT, artificer apprentices are attached to various ships and workshops of Sri Lanka Navy for on-the-job Training (OJT).

The Board of Management of NIT at Naval Head Quarters, headed by the Chief of Staff functions as the governing body, whilst the Director Of Studies functions as administrative and academic head of the institute. The tutorial staff comprise with a combination of permanent and visiting lecturers. Naval personnel with the requisite academic background are the permanent staff and the visiting lecturers positions are filled by non-Naval personnel with required academic qualifications.

NIT is equipped with a technical library, mechanical/ electrical/ electronic/computer laboratories, and an engine/ propulsion workshop bay, welding & fabrication workshop, carpentry workshop, model rooms and drawing room. The outsourced training facilities are also obtained from well-reputed institutes for the practical training for which in-house facilities are not available.
