In celebration of the Sri Lanka Navy’s upcoming 75th anniversary on 09 December 2025, the Navy has taken a major step towards promoting environmental conservation through a series of eco-friendly initiatives. Among these, a nationwide tree planting campaign was ceremonially launched at Galle Face on 25 October, under the distinguished patronage of the Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Kanchana Banagoda.
Following the Commander’s directives, the programme is being implemented across all Naval Commands, focusing on the cultivation of native plant species to strengthen coastal, lagoon, and inland ecosystems. The respective Area Commanders are responsible for supervising the ongoing activities within their regions.
Accordingly, the Eastern, Northern, North Central, Western, Southeastern, and Northwestern Naval Commands have conducted tree planting drives, featuring the planting of saplings with both environmental and economic importance including coconut, guava, mango, lime, arjun (kumbuk), and margosa (kohomba). These coordinated efforts reflect the Navy’s unified commitment to fostering a greener environment.
At the Naval Institute of Technology (NIT), Welisara, the programme was attended by the Director of Studies, Captain (L)S.S.H. Bandara, , along with NIT officers and staff, who actively participated in the tree planting activities.
As a key partner in the Presidential Task Force for the Clean Sri Lanka National Programme, the Sri Lanka Navy continues to spearhead numerous green initiatives. This special tree planting effort, organized to coincide with the Navy’s 75th anniversary, underscores its dedication to safeguarding the nation’s natural environment and ensuring the sustainability of its ecosystems for future generations.
